ABOUT
A soprano comfortable in both classical music and musical theatre, Cailin Smith dares to lean into the uncomfortable, use music as a mode of advocacy, and educate young audiences. Described as an “intense” and “moving storyteller,” Cailin desires to shine light on voices and stories that are often kept in shadow through finding and performing rarely performed art song and opera. Cailin is a passionate champion of new music in both classical and musical theater styles.

Cailin's performances have taken her to Florence, Italy and across the East Coast. She places importance on connecting with her audience, whether her job is to provide an escape, provoke an uncomfortable conversation, educate, or a combination of the three. She particularly seeks out projects that include works by and about women, modern and historical; the perception of mental health explored through music; liminal spaces and phases of life; and Irish language, culture, and history. In recital, Cailin strives to program works that are not frequently heard and is primarily passionate about new music and loves working with composers to bring new stories to life.

TEACHING STATEMENT
As a teacher, I believe in meeting my students holistically. I take into account all ways students use their voices, both literally and figuratively, and I encourage singing as a basis for confidence-building outside of the studio. Students can expect to receive repertoire assignments previously unfamiliar to them, but they can also expect to have input in what they sing. I believe in helping young singers find freedom in their voices so that they may feel empowered to not only continue in music, but to speak up in class and in their communities as well.

"Cailin is a wonderful teacher! I can't believe how much my voice has grown in just the last 6 months. I'd recommend her to any student or adult looking to hone their singing skills and have a blast doing so." -Rebecca H.

"Cailin listened to my goals and experiences, then met me where I was at better than any music instructor I have ever met. She is always attentive and flexible as my needs shift through the learning process, and her lessons are so fun they are often the highlight of my week!" -Sam E.
